Johanson, GraemeDension, T., L. Stillman and G. Johanson (2007). "The Australian non–profit sector and the challenge of ICT." First Monday 12(5). Abstract In recent years, the Australian Government has been encouraging the adoption of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) by non-profit organisations. In 2006, as a part of that process, the Government initiated a project to develop a possible model and business plan for a National Non-profit ICT Coalition (NNIC), conceived of as a coalition of leading non-profit organisations and social enterprises that would assist the sector in making more effective use of ICT. This paper draws on data collected during an extensive consultation process conducted to inform that model, and examines the data in terms of the response of non-profit organisations to the challenge of ICT within an Australian context. It then considers the implications for both the management of non-profit organisations and government policy.

Australian Law Librarian, Volume 12, no. 2, Autumn 2004. This paper explores the current and future relationships of law and librarianship in Australia. It argues that there are significant shared features in both professions. These include some comparable intellectual processes, many shared values, an essential service role in society, respect for the power and usefulness of information and communications technologies, a strongly female workforce within the library field with an increasingly strong representation in law, albeit within certain age groups, and portable skills that can be applied in numerous jobs.

Hardy, G. & Johanson, G. (2003). In Online Information Review, 27(5), 344-358. Abstract: Provision of public Internet access has been viewed by governments as a key step towards encouraging uptake among people who do not have access to information communication technologies, and as an important means of building an equitable information society. The Victorian Public Library network has led Australia in providing this access, at no small cost. However, little substantial data is available about the users of this public access, little is known of what they use the access for, nor how well it meets their needs. Through a wide-scale survey, and through focus groups this study explores the demographic characteristics of public library public access Internet users, the extent to which public access Internet provision meets the needs of those users, and users' planned/future use of public access Internet. The role of public access and the policy implications of this data are discussed.
